<image:caption>The character of Atom Boy is the quintessential superhero, with the one fatal flaw that he's not very good at it. It's his lack of ability as a superhero that hints at his inability to grow up, that for all his posturing he's essentially a child. All his equipmunk is rough, dinged up, and kinda crappy, and is over the top in both scale and function to make up for his lack of actual prowess at pwning. He assembles his weapons, armor, and vehicles from various aspects of Pop Culture that he finds lying around, with a preference toward items already in line with a battle mentality. His main enemies are noobz, enemies who couldn't ever actually beat Atom Boy because they're not human, anymore than the villains in comic books and action films are.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Popocalypse Now - Disthrashterpiece (Popocalypse Now)</image:title>
<image:caption>My work examines perpetual adolescence as it manifests in Pop Culture. It draws from aspects of Pop Culture that are obsessed with the hero story, the trials of which parallel the trials of growing up. In Campbellian terms, these stories are more obsessed with the "trials" part of the story, and less with the "return." The engaging part of any story is the battle, the fight, the struggle, and the areas of Pop Culture that I investigate and pull from-namely comic books, video games, action movies, and cartoons-are all as obsessed with the battle as the fans who actively engage these works. There is a Zeitgeist happening where the "Boy-Men," through reflexive anti-reflexivity, are extending their youth into a new idea of what it means to be grown up, where play, humor, and wit have a higher place than more serious pursuits.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Popocalypse Now - Insulation Tubing/ Wiring</image:title>
<image:caption>Disthrashterpiece Installation Shot I imagined Atom Boy's Command Center to more closely resemble Mad Max, Brazil, and Star Wars (think of interior shots of the Millenium Falcon with all the extraneous wires and tubes), than the more tidy and organized style of Batman. Atom Boy is definitely more anti-hero than Batman, and no apocalyptic environ is correct without lots of random crap lying around.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Disthrashterpiece Installation Shot I feel it's a rampant stereotype in apocalyptic films to have some type of vehicle either a) being used throughout the film, b) under repairs somewhere in the background, or c) all of the above. <image:caption>This is the Intro Trailer to Atom Boy/ the Popocalypse, in the style of The Dark Knight Rises teaser trailers. <image:title>Popocalypse Now - Tokusetsu kaiju battle (B Roll)</image:title>
<image:caption>This video is of a fight scene between Atom Boy Mecha Go-Go and a Giant Noob (Literally, he is very big). The style of the video was inspired by the Tokusetsu special effects of Power Rangers, with the grow sequences in the beginning, the staged, slow moving, stylized fighting of the characters, lots of sparks, and the slightly obnoxious, simplified and repeated Power Rangers theme playing throughout. The whole video is shot on a green screen with foam rocks in the foreground, implying either a), the entire Popocalypse just looks like a bunch of green screen sets with bad props, or b) by saying B Roll in the title, there is still some editing to be done on the video. Aka, lotta 4th wall play. <image:caption>This is the music video for the theme song of Atom Boy, Entitled Disthrashterpiece (Atom Boy, Saviour of the Popocalypse). It was shot with heavy metal music videos in general as well as music videos released with action movies in mind, with lots of random band shots and driving around in vehicles, because that's what's cool. <image:caption>I spent a semester constructing the Hammernaut Tenderizer 5000 and the Lil' Sluggertron 5000, so one of the two was definitely getting it's own video. Hence Hammer Time, cuz duh. The music in the background is a cover of a Megaman Boss Fight Song, with lots of gratuitous hammer footage. <image:title>Ceramics (New!) - Ceramics Statement</image:title>
<image:caption>My work has evolved via years of experimentation, an interest in multiple fields outside of ceramics, and techniques learned from other artists. Appropriating the visual cues of Car Culture and Sci-Fi into the formal setting of functional pottery, through the lines and forms utilized, is the focus of my creative drive. I strive to bring animation and dynamic movement into my work, by pushing outside of the "normal" boundaries of ceramics while respecting traditional techniques. It was the first time I'd ever tried to push the clay as far in as those indents go, and it caused a really nice volume to be contained right there at the shoulder. This piece has inspired my current larger vases.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Cone 11 Soda-Fired porcelain 10" H, 11"L 2016 Sold The latest in the Wicked Ice Cream series of T-Pots, CreamSickleSaurus Rex has the most movement and character yet out of the WICS T-Pots. The Xenomorph (the name of the Creature from Aliens) part of the title came about because the end of the spout does look like a mouth, and the whole spout is coming out of very liplike attachments, but my version is quite a bit more "cute" than its namesake. I realize it also kinda looks like a dinosaur, which happens.</image:caption>

Plus, you know, spikes are wicked... I feel some shout outs are in order, to Mike Vatalaro, Bill Brouillard, and John Oles for the bubbles and the scrunchies.

<image:caption>Solidworks 3D model of Hammernaut. The shaft/ handle was a component I already had, along with the tubing and the fuel canisters, which were modeled off of paint cans but became a different type of bottle on the final model.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rendering of G.O.D.. The grip is appropriately sized for a human hand, while the rest of the gun grows from this point to be kind of obnoxious. Also, it is technically a snub nose revolver, partly because those are cool looking and partly due to the irony of the juxtaposition with the massive scope.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a still from a video of the G.O.D. gun rotating. I picked this really obnoxious background to reference the Star Trek Holodeck/ Reboot 3D world aesthetic. This video, along with the M.P.B.F.G. 5000 redesign poster, were attempts at incorporating 3D modeling into my work without having to build the solid objects. This video never actually made it into the Disthrashterpiece video loop.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Process</image:title>
<image:caption>"Bloody smiley face" buckler shield shoulder pad. I went this route with the shoulder pad to pat homage to that great post-modern comic book, Watchmen, along with adding some asymmetry to the costume. The plastic used to vacuum from the shield was red, so it was a quick step from there to get the red to come through the paint by burning it (outside, while wearing a mask). I also riveted the shield to a wooden backing plate covered in sand and plastidip, to add a rugged feel to the backside. The graying/ wearing effect comes from putting the piece back in the sandblaster after paint.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The monitors mounted in their boxes and raised on their support columns. At this point everything is being held in place by gravity, while the pipe clamps here are serving the function of holding the ribbed columnar element and metal sheafing in place, prior to being bolted and screwed together. In the final product the clamps serve as an aesthetic device.</image:caption>

<image:caption>CNCing of oversized screw caps. Honestly, I'm mostly putting this pic in because I thought the CNC was the coolest thing ever, and watching something I designed on a computer enter the real world is pretty awesome. Also kinda gives away that the Hammernaut is made of foam.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Process</image:title>
<image:caption>M.P.B.F.G. 5000 first iteration, foam, wood, pvc and "found" object construction. The biggest hurdle was making a supercharger and a gun with suck ridiculous proportions fit together and flow aesthetically. I was also really interested in defying certain logic with guns, namely that they're longer than they are wide or tall to help guide the projectile along, so M.P.B.F.G. 5000 is quite a bit taller than it is long.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Process</image:title>
<image:caption>This angle is pretty awesome. The gun body was originally going to be cast in porcelain, so that there would be that really nice bright white to add to the whole "God gun" element. Also, the detailing was meant to make this thing look very tactical. This was also my first time playing around with textures and materials with rendering, so it's a little over the top.</image:caption>

<image:caption>B.H.J. finished and wielded. Did not take into account that the bayonet would get in the way of the grip. Also, being all steel and wood, this thing is HEAVY, but it's cool, Atom Boy can wield it one handed like a sawed off is meant to be handled. Note the txt horns, which were branded in. Also, the start of the AtomBeard- eat your hear out Hugh Jackman.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Process</image:title>
<image:caption>Mostly finished Hammernaut, minus a few wires and some distressing. I ended up throwing the rockets on the potters wheel and using underglazes to get that really obnoxious pop and shine, while the fuel canisters are actual decommissioned nitrogen bottles. The point of building it out of foam was to make it light enough to wield in one hand, unfortunately the ceramic and aluminum, although thin, add enough weight back (possibly along with the resin used to seal the foam) to be too heavy and unwieldy for one hand, but two isn't so bad. Unfortunately, the AtomSuit needs to be redesigned if the Hammernaut is ever to be wielded live.</image:caption>

<image:caption>M.P.B.F.G. 5000 completed. Learned a lot of lessons with this piece. I had been hung up for a while on making really finished looking work, and for me that meant crisp, clean, to the point of looking "real." I learned after the fact that that sentiment could be done in a number of different ways, and a lot easier than building the whole thing from scratch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Monitors and console unpainted. The "console" was built using a circular clothing rack, found steel plates, and random computer parts, while the diagnostic table is a grocery store scanner turned on its side. As you can see some fabrication using wood was involved to make all the pieces gel. The monitors have been enclosed behind pegboard covers.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mocked up B.H.J. with rounded out and modeled handle with inserts, missing the knurling, and fabricated breech and barrels. Once again, the spikes got dropped in the final design, and the scope became much larger. The tube in front is a test of the bluing compound, while the steel ring ends up getting machined to fit inside as end caps to beef up the look of the barrels. The wax acting as the breech covers will get cast in aluminum and stained.</image:caption>

<image:caption>M.P.B.F.G. 5000 redesign. Lots of updates to the original, dual lightsaber belt feed, double barrels, double tracks for serpentine belts. Also, it was redesigned with Atom Boy and his Powerfist in mind, so the whole she-bang slides over the Powerfist, with the barrels turning around the fist. This was the fist and most prominent of the "Apps" designed for the Powerfist. Obviously, much more detail has been added to this version, along with better integration between the engine and gun components.</image:caption>
